Bill E. Sawyer, a man whose life was marked by devotion to family, faith, and community, passed away peacefully on April 16, 2026, at his daughters’ home. Born on December 12, 1933, Mr. Sawyer lived a rich and purposeful life, touching many through his steadfast commitment to those he loved and the church he served.
He was also known for his business, he owned and operated with his business partner, Clyde Robinson with Robinson and Sawyer Surveying and Engineering.
Mr. Sawyer was a devoted husband for nearly 71 years to his beloved wife, Mildred Abbotine Sawyer, who preceded him in death. Their partnership was a cornerstone of his life, and together they built a legacy centered on love, faith, and family. Beyond his role as a husband, Bill took immense pride in his role as a father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, cherishing time spent with them as his greatest joy and proudest accomplishment.
His enduring faith found expression through many years of active involvement with First Free Will Baptist Church in Gastonia, known today as Legacy Church. He was a respected Deacon and Sunday School teacher, often penning lessons well into his nineties, a testament to his lifelong dedication to spiritual education and mentorship within his community.
Bill Sawyer’s family remembers him as a dedicated patriarch. He is survived by his children, Dr. Randall E. Sawyer and his wife Teresa Cupp Sawyer, and Susan S. Hiltibidal and her husband Michael. His grandchildren—Amanda Williams and her husband Rob, Brandon Hiltibidal and his wife Scarlett, Lauren Crittenden and her husband Brian, Jonathan Sawyer and his wife Kayla, Rebecca Lee and her husband Peter—carry forward his legacy. His great-grandchildren—EverGrace Hiltibidal, Joy Sawyer Hiltibidal, Brooklan Hiltibidal, James Hiltibidal, Avonlea Crittenden, Lincoln Crittenden, Lanie Williams, Kellan Lee, Riley Williams, Jameson Williams, Murphy Williams, and Arkynne Lee—stand as a living testament to the values and love he imparted.
Mr. Sawyer’s early years were shaped by his parents and siblings, all of whom have since passed: his beloved wife Mildred, and his four sisters—Virginia Nichols, Betty Beavers, Jewel Beavers, and Brenda Penkston. He is survived by his brother Don Sawyer.
After the loss of his wife, Mr. Sawyer relocated to Simpsonville to live with his daughter, where he spent his final days surrounded by the warmth and love of family. He treasured these moments, as well as the enduring fellowship of his church community.
