Gastonia - Billy Joe Deaton, 91, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 29, 2020 at Brian Center, Hendersonville. Billy Joe was born in Cramerton on March 18, 1929 and is the son of the late Creed Shelby and Minnie Ella Reinhardt Deaton.
Billy Joe was a graduate of Gastonia High School, he then entered the United States Army during the Korean War. After completing his military tour of duty, he began a long career as a Lineman with Southern Bell Telephone Company (AT&T). He was a member of Unity Baptist Church and former member of Calvary Baptist Church.
He was an accomplished artist and loved to build wooden model structures at his Work Shop at his home.
Billy Joe loved his family and he especially loved his "Nancy", wife of 62 years, he loved his family beach trips and being outside working in his yard and garden and he especially loved roses.
He was a loving son, husband, father, brother and grandfather and was a friend to everyone. You could always count on the Deaton smile when you met Billy Joe. He will truly be missed by so many.
Billy Joe is survived by his two loving daughters, Carolyn Moore and husband Steve, Beverly Waters and husband Don of Gastonia; his loving son, Linden Ray Deaton and wife Paula of Dallas; 3 grandchildren, whom he adored, Christy Moore Barrett and husband Johnny, Kevin Hunter Moore and wife Carol, Summer Deaton Sebastian and husband Josh; great grandchildren, Kaleigh Arabella Moore, Luke Moore, Tyler Moore, Ben Moore, Aubrey Moore; several nieces and nephews.
There will not be a Visitation for family and friends due to the Covid-19 Pandemic.
Billy Joe's body will lie in state at Withers and Whisenant Funeral Home on Saturday, January 2, 2021 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Saturday, for friends to pay their respects.
The Family Will Not Be Present.
A Celebration of Life Service will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday, January 3, 2021 at Calvary Baptist Church, 3001 York Highway, Gastonia, with Pastor Josh Glandon officiating.
Due to the Covid Pandemic, masks and social distancing will be required.
Interment will follow at Gaston Memorial Park with Military Honors by the North Carolina National Guard and the Gaston Honor Guard.
The Family will speak to family and friends after the Graveside Services have concluded.
Billy Joe was preceded in death by his parents; loving wife of 62 years, Nancy Elmore Deaton; a son, Billy Joe Deaton, Jr.; two sisters, twin-sister, Betty Ellington and Pauline Shields; three brothers, Ralph Deaton, James Deaton, Ray Deaton.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to be made to: Unity Baptist Church, 418 North Myrtle School Road, Gastonia, North Carolina 28052 or Calvary Baptist Church, 3001 York Highway, Gastonia, North Carolina 28052.
