BJ Withers

Gastonia – Burleigh “BJ” James Withers, 90, passed away July 2, 2022, at his residence surrounded by his loving family.  

He was born in Gaston County on October 10, 1931 to the late Rosby Evlon “Robe” Withers and Mildred Walker Withers. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sister, Colleen Brantley.

BJ was a veteran of the United States Air Force. He was an avid worker and retired from United Oil of the Carolinas. Two of B.J.’s passions were golf and music.  B.J. had a lifelong passion for golf.  His love of the game began early in life caddying at the local Municipal Golf Course.  He enjoyed playing the game with his cherished friends.  Later in life B.J. published a golf instructional book, “The World’s Greatest Golf Lesson”. B.J. also had a passion for music. He enjoyed listening to and exchanging music with his friends. B.J. had an appreciation for all genres of music.  He particularly enjoyed Beach music.  He enjoyed going to Myrtle Beach, his favorite vacation spot.  B.J. was an eternal optimist.  One of his favorite sayings was “Lots of good things are going to happen today”.  B.J. was often quoted as saying “I’m the luckiest man in the world” and “I have two of everything”.

Those left to cherish his memory is his devoted wife of 67 years, Juanita Hale Withers; sons, Burleigh James “Chip” Withers, Jr. and wife Debbie, Brett Withers and wife Lisa; grandchildren, Brendon Withers, Haley Withers, Brandon Bryson, Tabitha Abernathy and her children, Kaitlyn, Jake, and Lily.

Services will be private.
