Cheng Chang

Dallas – Cheng Chang, 91, passed away August 10, 2022 at Blue Ridge Healthcare and Rehabilitation in Hendersonville, North Carolina.

In 2014 Cheng wrote a letter telling his history of how he came to this country and the life he made here. We thought it best to let him tell you his story:

“I am Cheng Chang. I came to this country in 1979 along with other family members from the country of Laos. We were some of the "boat people" that were able to come to the United States if we had a sponsor. Three area Lutheran Churches which included Holy Communion, Philadelphia, and Antioch helped us by teaching us your language, finding homes for us, jobs, and teaching us how to become independent.

I lost my hearing from a bomb explosion that also killed my wife and three children. Since my hearing loss put me at a disadvantage, I have had a lot of trouble through the years communicating, but I have learned some sign language and I also can use pictures and charades. I have learned a lot from my many American friends who have taken the time to get to know me and help me.

I had several jobs locally before becoming the Grounds Keeper for the Town of Dallas and I kept the court square looking good for many years before I retired at age 70. I am now 83 years old and enjoy yard work and gardening. I also love flowers of all kind. I am proud to be here in the United States and to live in the town of Dallas, N.C.”

A committal service will be held at the Holy Communion Lutheran Church columbarium, 103 W. Church St. Dallas, North Carolina, on Wednesday August 24, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Shea Berbaum and Pastor George Rhyne officiating.
