.Garland Matthew Henson, Jr., lovingly known as JR and  Jr., passed away peacefully on July 8, 2026, at CaroMont Regional Medical Center. Born January 6, 1952, in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, JR lived a life marked by enduring connections to his family, friends, and community.

Throughout his seventy-four years, JR cultivated strong, meaningful relationships, cherishing the ties that rooted him to those he loved most. He is survived by his devoted nieces, Chasity Massey (Troy), Alicia Baucom (Matthew), and Melanie Henson, and 10 great nieces and nephews, each of whom held a special place in JR’s heart. Their lives have been shaped by his quiet strength, thoughtful presence, and unfailing support.

JR’s journey was also shaped by profound familial bonds, and he now reunites with those who preceded him in passing: his beloved father, Garland Matthew Henson; his cherished mother, Princess Aileen Davis Henson; his brother, Roger Henson; and his close friend, Sheila Payseur and beloved dog, Jeter. Their memories remain treasured by all who knew JR.

A testament to his character is reflected not only in the family who survives him, but also in the legacy of kindness and commitment he leaves behind. JR’s life was grounded in a deep sense of loyalty and humility, and his peaceful nature made a lasting impact on all fortunate enough to share in his story.

To honor and celebrate JR’s life, visitation will be held at Garver Memorial Baptist Church, 1920 Modena Street, Gastonia, NC 28054, on Monday, July 13, 2026, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM. Following the visitation, a Celebration of Life service will take place at the same location at 1:00 PM. Burial will follow at United Bethel Church, El Bethel Road, Kings Mountain, NC 28086.

JR’s memory will continue to inspire those who knew him, serving as a reminder of the power of kindness, love, and steadfast presence. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

JR’s spirit will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him, and in the enduring positive impact he made on his country, his community, and countless individuals.
