George Harmon Rogers, a devoted husband, father, and lifelong servant to his community and church, passed away peacefully at his residence on June 4, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. Born on January 19, 1936, in Geauga County, Ohio, George lived a life marked by dedication, compassion, and unwavering commitment to helping others.
George’s professional journey began as an engineer at a rubber company, followed by years of diligent work in construction. However, it was his lasting service at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer that defined much of his life. A member since 1967, he retired as custodian after many years of tending to the needs of the church he so deeply cherished. His love for the church and the church family was evident in every action he took; he found joy and purpose in caring for the spiritual home that meant so much to him.Beyond his work at the church, George was passionate about serving his wider community. Throughout the years, he traveled extensively across the United States and Puerto Rico, teaching safe boating as a committed member of the United States Power Squadron. His spirit of service extended to helping build Habitat Homes, contributing significantly to the development of Hope Lutheran School, and supporting the expansion of the Fellowship building at his church. George also dedicated time to working with the Crisis Assistance Ministries, and faithfully picking up and delivering Meals on Wheels, touching many lives along the way.Known for his generosity and willingness to help anyone in need, George’s personality radiated kindness and an earnest desire to serve. He was a man who did not hesitate to give freely of his time and talents, especially to those within his church community.George is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 70 years, Effie Mae Miller Rogers, with whom he shared a lifetime of love and partnership. He also leaves behind his children: Steven George Rogers (Rita), Gary James Rogers (Karen), and George Harmon Rogers, Jr. (Sandy). His legacy continues through his cherished grandchildren—Britnie, Beth Ann, Brandi, Christina, April, Kurt, Dariel, and Noah—as well as 22 great-grandchildren who carry forward his enduring spirit. He is also survived by his sister, Emma McGuire.He was preceded in death by his parents, Harmon G. Rogers and Audrey Marie Carson Rogers, brothers Walter Rogers and Carson Rogers, and sister Luella Scheve.George’s life will be honored at a visitation held on Saturday, June 13, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 1:45 PM at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, located at 1915 South New Hope Road, Gastonia, North Carolina. This will be followed by a memorial service from 2:00 PM the same day, where friends, family, and community members will gather to celebrate his remarkable life and enduring contributions. Entombment will be in the Niche at the Church Garden.George Harmon Rogers, leaves behind a profound legacy of faithfulness, selflessness, and devotion. His lifelong commitment to serving others and his church has left an indelible mark on all who knew him. He will be remembered with deep affection and respect by his family, friends, and the many lives he touched.Memorials may be made to the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, 1915 South New Hope Road, Gastonia, NC 28054, in honor of George’s lifelong dedication to the church and its mission.
