Gerald Dean Hardin, a man distinguished by his ingenuity and kindness, passed away peacefully on April 27, 2026, at CaroMont Regional Medical Center in Belmont, North Carolina. Born on October 2, 1938, in Andrews, NC, (Cherokee County) Gerald lived a life marked by notable accomplishments and deep family devotion.
A proud inventor, Gerald developed and patented the Craft Stove, a testament to his innovative spirit and technical skill. Beyond his professional achievements, he was known for his proficiency in pinochle, a hobby that highlighted his skill and patience. His proudest accomplishments, however, were centered around his family; he cherished spending time with his loved ones and was remembered as a gentle and generous soul.
Gerald enjoyed time with his family and eating at Tony’s Ice Cream with his friends. He also enjoyed watching Gunsmoke and Jimmy Swaggart on the television with his fur baby Abby.
Gerald was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Gwynn and Carrie Jones Hardin; his devoted wife of 52 years, Sue Gibbie Hardin; and his siblings Alice Buchanan, Charles Hardin, Lewis Hardin, and Ray Hardin. Their memories are cherished deeply by those who knew him.
He is survived by his children: Dr. Harrell Hardin and Shae Little, Darrell Hardin and wife Angela Hardin, Sherry Dunaway and husband, Dean Dunaway. Gerald’s legacy continues through his grandchildren, Ryan and, Debra Dunaway, Taylor Dunaway, Courtney Hardin, Madison Hardin, Morgan Hardin, and Wyatt Hardin, as well as his great-grandchildren Faith, Annie, Violet, and Axtyn who brought him great joy and pride.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, May 2, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Withers & Whisenant Funeral Home and Cremation, located at 2916 Union Road, Gastonia, NC, 28054. This will be immediately followed by the funeral service at 2:00 PM in the Chapel with Pastor Todd Terry officiating.
Gerald’s life was one of meaningful achievements and heartfelt connections. He will be remembered with great respect and affection by all whose lives he touched. His legacy as an inventor, a skilled craftsman in pinochle and, most importantly, a loving family man and friend to many. He will endure forever in the hearts of his family and friends.
