Gregory A. Whisenant

Gregory Alton Whisenant, 72, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 14, 2022 with his loving wife by his side.

He was born in Maiden, North Carolina on December 24, 1949 and was the son of the late Charles Banks Whisenant and Lottie McRee Whisenant. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his sister, Judith Whisenant Stevenson and her husband Dr. Robert Stevenson. 

He was a member of First United Methodist Church where he was active for many years before COVID. He enjoyed watching sports of any kind. Greg was a graduate of Maiden High School and Gupton Jones College of Funeral Service. Greg had been co-owner of Goodin-Drum Funeral Home, Maiden Funeral Home, and Withers & Whisenant Funeral Home. He also served at Sossoman Funeral Home in Burke County for many years.

Greg is survived by his loving wife of 23 years, Janis Ramsey Whisenant; step children, Tiffany Schweitzer and her daughters, Alexandria Schweitzer and Sierra Schweitzer; Jeff Lawing and his boys, Tristan Lawing, Kevin Lawing, and Chaston Lawing; his brother, Charles L. “Chub” Whisenant; his sister, Cindy Whisenant Moose and husband John; and multiple nieces and nephews.

Greg will lie in state on Thursday, November 17, 2022 from 1:00 until 3:00 p.m. at Withers & Whisenant Funeral Home and from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. on Thursday at First United Methodist Church, 303 North Main Avenue, Maiden. The family will not be present on Thursday.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 3:00 p.m., Friday at First United Methodist Church. 303 N. Main Avenue, Maiden. A Celebration of Life service will be at 3:00 p.m. November 18, 2022 at First United Methodist Church with Pastor Angela Burris officiating.

Interment will follow at St. Matthews Reformed Church Cemetery, 4575 Maiden Hwy., Maiden.
