Jean Gosnell Poteat, a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, and sister, passed away peacefully on May 16, 2026, at CaroMont Regional Medical Center in Gastonia, North Carolina. Born on February 17, 1947, in Fingerview, South Carolina, Jean lived a life marked by dedication, love, and an enduring commitment to her family and community.
Throughout her varied career, Jean demonstrated a strong work ethic and adaptability, contributing her talents across multiple fields including manufacturing, warehouse operations, security, and notably dedicating eleven years to Walmart. Beyond her professional pursuits, she found joy and fulfillment in her role as a homemaker, a role she embraced with warmth and devotion.
Jean was known to be a wonderful and loving presence in the lives of all who knew her. She took immense pride in her family, especially her grandchildren, who held a special place in her heart. Her affection extended beyond her human family to the many cats with whom she shared her home, as well as to her pastime of fishing, a reflection of her gentle and nurturing spirit.
She is survived by her devoted husband of nearly 30 years, Bobby Poteat; her children Douglas Haney and his wife Oneta, Betty Evans and her husband Daniel, Dennis Creed, Jr. and his wife Donna, Lindel Creed and his wife Norma, Denise Allen and her spouse Kenny, and Dean Poteat and his wife Rachel. Jean's legacy also lives on through her twelve grandchildren and twenty-six great-grandchildren. Her loving brother Charles Gosnell and his wife Brenda, along with numerous nieces and nephews, also carry her memory forward.
Jean was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Theodore and Willie Mae Miller Gosnell; her daughter, Pam Boswell; and her siblings, Pat Toller, Shirley Schierbaum, Joyce Riley, and Ricky Gosnell. Despite these losses, Jean remained a pillar of strength and affection within her extended family.
Her family and friends remember Jean for her unwavering kindness, her welcoming spirit, and her joyful companionship. She treasured spending time with her loved ones, creating memories that will be cherished for generations.
A visitation will be held on Friday, May 22, 2026, from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Withers & Whisenant Funeral Home and Cremation, located at 2916 Union Road, Gastonia, NC 28054. This will be followed immediately by a memorial service at 5:00 PM at the same location.
Jean’s life was one of compassion, dedication, and love. Surrounded by family and friends in her final moments, she leaves behind a legacy rich in warmth and familial devotion, a testament to a life well-lived and a love deeply felt. She will be remembered with great affection and respect by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
