Jim Ferguson

Gastonia – James “Jim” Alfred Ferguson, 86, passed away peacefully July 18, 2022 at Brookdale – Robinwood surrounded by his loving family.

Jim was born in Gaston County on December 6, 1935 to the late Robert and Carrie Spencer Ferguson. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 61 years, Shelby Sparrow Ferguson, brother, Roland Ferguson, and his sister, Awilda Stowe.

Jim was a lifelong active member of West Avenue Presbyterian Church. He served on many committees at West Avenue Presbyterian Church and the Presbytery of Western North Carolina. Jim was a member of the choir and West Avenue Singers where he also served as an Elder. He was very active in church softball and volleyball. He enjoyed working in the garden, playing golf, and watching his beloved Duke Blue Devils and Atlanta Braves.

Jim was President and operated the family business, Franklin Hardware until it closed in 1994. He then worked at Gaston Rentals for a few years until he retired.

Left to cherish his memory is his son, Mike Ferguson and wife Melonie; daughter, Sandra Broome; four grandchildren, Luke Ferguson and wife Becca, Amber Ferguson and fiancé Kobi Palomaki, Chandler Broome, and Grayson Broome; sister, Virginia Jonas; sister-in-law, Barbara Ferguson; numerous nieces and nephews; and the very special friends from West Avenue Presbyterian Church who are our extended family.

A Celebration of Life service will be Tuesday, July 26^th, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. at Withers and Whisenant Funeral Home with Mrs. Becca Ferguson officiating.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. prior to his service in the Chapel.

The family extends a heartfelt thank you to the staff of Gaston Hospice and to the staff and caregivers of Brookdale-Robinwood for their kindness and compassion given to Jim and his family.
