Jody "Joe" Scott Huss, born on September 23, 1957, in Gaston County, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on July 21, 2026, at Carolina Caring-Sherrills Ford Hospice House in Sherrills Ford, NC after a lengthy illness.

Those who mourn his loss while cherishing his memory include his sister, Candace Huss Hulsey, his special niece, Jennifer Simpson, five nieces, seven great-nieces and four great-nephews, along with many other family and friends. The Huss family would like to acknowledge and thank John Clayton, a great friend to Joe, who's dedication and help to Joe and his family during this time is immeasurable. Joe took great pride and joy in his nieces and nephews and their lives have been enriched by his unwavering love and support.

Joe was preceded in death by his father, George Brice Huss, his mother, Mickie Thomas Huss, his brother, George Michael Huss and his nephew, Steven Hulsey.

Born and raised in Gaston County, Joe studied and received several college degrees including Electrical Installation and Maintenance and Air Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Technology. Joe served in the United States Navy for over ten years and graduated from the Navy Nuclear Power School in Orlando, Florida and received various other certifications in Naval Technical Training. As a Petty Officer, Joe served on the USS Seahorse in the Submarine Nuclear Propulsion division with his last assignment in Naples, Italy. He was honorably discharged in 1986 having received numerous commendations for Good Conduct, the Battle "E" Award, Navy Expeditionary Medal and Sea Service Employment Ribbon. After his naval career, Joe worked as an Electronic Testing Technical for AT&T for 20 years.

Jody's many interests and hobbies included Bible study, reading, world history and military hardware, including heavy combat vehicles, aircraft and ships. His knowledge was far ranged and included an extension collection of die-cast planes, ships and tanks. He was an expert on world history and political science, always enjoying a good political debate. He will be missed for his vast array of knowledge on multiple subjects, always studying and applying himself to find knowledge and truth. He loved the old television programs and also had a significant collection of DVDs along with hundreds of books that he read and studied. Joe was intelligent, curious and interesting.

Joe will be honored with a graveside service on Monday, August 3, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Gaston Memorial Park, War Memorial section, located at 1200 South New Hope Road, Gastonia, NC. Following the graveside service, a visitation with refreshments will take place from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Withers & Whisenant Funeral Home and Cremation, 2916 Union Road, Gastonia, NC 28054, where friends and family alike are welcome to gather and pay their respects.

As the Huss family joins together in remembrance, they invite all who knew and cared for Joe to celebrate his lasting impact, dignified presence, and the quiet marks of love and integrity he leaves behind. Joe’s memory will be held close, his life deeply appreciated, and his absence profoundly felt.

As those who cherished him gather to pay their final respects, may they find comfort in the memories they created together and in his love of God, country and family.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Carolina Caring Hospice or to a disabled veterans program of your choice.
