John L. Glenn, born on December 16, 1942, in Gaston County, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on June 18, 2026, in Gastonia, NC. His 83 years were marked by a steadfast dedication to his country, his community, and the passions that brought him joy.
Throughout his distinguished career, John devoted himself to serving in the United States military. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel from the U.S. Army, a rank attained through years of commitment and exemplary service. His journey in uniform also included service with the U.S. Marines, where he flew H46's in Vietnam, reflecting both his versatility and his deep sense of duty. John’s legacy in the military stands as a testament to his discipline, courage, and unwavering resolve.
John’s devotion to service did not end with his military career. He was a passionate animal lover, always finding comfort and companionship in the presence of animals throughout his life. This gentle side was complemented by his love of flight—a passion he not only indulged in but also generously shared with others as a flight instructor. His skill and enthusiasm for aviation found another meaningful outlet as he served as a commissioner with the Jackson County Airport, where he dedicated time and expertise to help shape the future of local aviation.
Beyond his professional achievements, John will be remembered for the warmth, reliability, and sincerity he brought to every endeavor and relationship. His genuine love of life and every living creature, his commitment to mentoring others in aviation, and his enduring sense of responsibility to the community have left a lasting legacy. He was a 32nd degree Mason with the Masonic Lodge and also the Scottish Rite. He was also part of Dillsboro Lodge 459 and Latorti Lodge 358.
He was a passionate animal lover, always finding comfort and companionship in the presence of animals throughout his life.
He also served as Commander of the Maggie Valley VFW and was District Commander of the Western District VFW.
John is survived by his sons, Charles Glenn and Josh Glenn; his two wonderful grandchildren, Sydney Glenn and Evan Glenn; and many wonderful friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Charlie Glenn and Dr. Dorothy Norman Glenn.
Family, friends, and all whose lives were touched by John L. Glenn are invited to remember and celebrate his life. A visitation will be held on Saturday, June 27, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Withers & Whisenant Funeral Home and Cremation, located at 2916 Union Road, Gastonia, NC 28054. The funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m. at the same location. John will be laid to rest at Oakwood Cemetery, 217 S Chester St, Gastonia, NC 28052, with Military Honors.
John L. Glenn’s spirit will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him, and in the enduring positive impact he made on his country, his community, and countless individuals.
