Josefina Alvarez Figeroa

Chela (Josefina Alvarez) was born on March 19^th, 1928, in Gurabo, a town in east-central Puerto Rico, being the youngest in a family of eight children:  four boys and four girls.  In her family, everyone had assigned tasks to help out with the chores of the house.  She was given the responsibility of minor tasks, such as chasing away the hens so that they did not eat the flowers from the bean plants, so that the harvest of beans might not be lost, a task which she did not like and which bored her.  She was also responsible for fetching water from the stream, which would supply daily water needs, and she had to find wood to fuel the cooking fire.  She went to school to the end of eighth grade, in a time when there was not money to buy shoes; so, she went barefoot.

In time, her brothers and sister left home to start their own lives, leaving behind in the household: her parents  Blas Alvarez and Nemesia Figueroa, her brother Domingo, and a niece Ramonita.  Her father became ill, making it impossible for him to work, and her mother began to work in agriculture to support the household.

When Chela reached 13 years old, it was she who took over the responsibility of supporting the family.  This happened at the time after they had left the mountains of Gurabo and had settled in the region of San Juan.   There, Chela got a job in a factory that made matches; with her salary, she supported herself and her family.  They lived in a small house that was provided to them by her brother Benito.

It was in this place that she met her husband, Ramon Torres, when she was only 17 years old.  Within a few months, they were married on May 11^th, 1946, and were to be together for 69 years.  Children came soon:  Deidad Milagros in 1947 and Jose Ramon in 1948.  In time, God would bless them with four male grandsons, six great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter.

Her parents always lived under her care; the two of them died in her home:  her father in 1951 and her mother in 1969.

Chela had the gift of taking care of the sick; thus, she did for her parents, brothers, neighbors, her husband, and her children.  She was famous for her chicken soup and the teas that she brewed with different plants she found in the garden, to ease the suffering of the sick.

She liked to work, in order to financially help her husband and her children.  Always looking for ways to do this, for a time, she sold personal care products door to door.  Later, she got a job in the government of Puerto Rico, desiring a job that offered a higher salary, greater reliability, and better benefits, she was promoted up to being assistant nutritionist, and she worked that job until retirement.

Chela had a character known for docility, humility, diplomacy, and the desire to help the needy.  When she found out about medical equipment that people no longer needed and were giving away, she took the initiative of retrieving the equipment and taking it to those who needed it, such as:  wheelchairs, adjustable beds, and other things.

In her final years, enjoying good health, thanks be to God, she would not remain inactive wherever she lived, but always looked for ways to help with the household chores.  She even picked gandules (pigeon peas) when it was necessary.

Recently, in January of this year, she began to get sick, declining little by little, and finally passing to the Lord on March 30^th, 2023.

Chela (Josefina Álvarez) nació el 19 de marzo de 1928, en Gurabo, un pueblo en el centro-este de Puerto Rico, siendo la menor de una familia de ocho hijos:  cuatro varones y cuatro féminas.  En su familia, todos tenían tareas asignadas para ayudar en el quehacer del hogar.  A ella la responsabilizaban de tareas menores, como espantar las gallinas para que no se comieran las flores de las plantas de habichuelas y se echara a perder la cosecha, una tarea que a ella no le agradaba y le aburria.  También era responsable de buscar el agua en la quebrada, que se utilizaría para el uso diario, y tenía que buscar la leña para cocinar el fogón.  Fue a la escuela hasta completar el octavo grado, en un tiempo que no había dinero para comprar zapatos; así que ella iba descalza.

Con el tiempo sus hermanos y hermanas se emanciparon, quedando en el hogar: sus padres Blas Álvarez y Nemesia Figueroa, su hermano Domingo y una sobrina Ramonita.  Su padre enfermó, imposibilitándolo de trabajar y su madre empezó trabajo en la agricultura para traer sustento al hogar.

Cuando Chela llegó a los 13 años de edad, fue ella quien tomó la responsabilidad de traer el sustento a la familia.  Esto sucedió para el tiempo que ya habían salido de las montañas de Gurabo y se habían ubicado en el área de San Juan.  Ahí Chela consiguió trabajo en una fábrica de fósforos; con su sueldo traía el sustento para ella y su familia.  Vivian en una casa pequeña que les proveyó su hermano Benito.

Fue en esa área que conoció a su esposo, Ramón Torres, cuando solo contaba 17 años de edad.  A los meses contrajeron matrimonio el 11 de mayo del 1946, estando unidos por 69 años.  Los hijos vinieron pronto:  Deidad Milagros en el 1947 y José Ramón en el 1948.  Con el tiempo el Señor les regalo cuatro nietos varones, siete biznietos y una tataranieta.

Sus padres siempre vivieron bajo su cuidado; murieron los dos en su hogar:  el padre en el 1951 y su madre en el 1969.

Chela tenia el don de cuidar enfermos; así lo hizo con sus padres, hermanos, vecinos y con su esposo y sus hijos.  Era famosa por su sopa de pollo y los teses que preparaba con diferentes plantas, que encontraba en el jardín, para aliviar las molestias de los enfermos.

A ella le gustaba trabajar para ayudar a su esposo y a sus hijos económicamente.  Siempre buscando la manera de hacerlo, vendió productos de cuidado personal de casa en casa por un tiempo.  Luego consiguió trabajo en el gobierno de Puerto Rico, buscando un trabajo que ofreciera mas dinero, permanencia y mejores beneficios, llegando a ser ayudante de nutricionista, en el que trabajó hasta retirarse.

Chela se caracterizó por carácter dócil, humilde, diplomático y el deseo de ayudar al necesitado.  Cuando se enteraba de equipos médicos que las personas ya no necesitaban y donaban, ella se encargaba de buscarlos y llevarlos a los que necesitaban ese equipo, como:  sillas de ruedas, cama de posición y otras cosas.

Ya en sus últimos años de vida y gracias a Dios, gozando de una buena salud, no se quedaba sentada donde estaba viviendo y buscaba la manera de ayudar con los quehaceres del hogar.  Aun recogía gandules cuando era necesario.

Recientemente, el pasado enero de este ano, empezó a enfermar, decayendo poco a poco, teniendo su transición hacia el Señor el 30 de marzo del 2023.
