Judith "Judy" Ann Leake Horne, a devoted educator and cherished family member, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loved ones on January 3, 2026, in Gastonia, North Carolina. Born on March 22, 1943, in Greenville, Tennessee, Judy lived a life filled with purpose, dedication, and love.
Judy’s professional journey was marked by her heartfelt commitment to teaching. She proudly served in the Gaston County School System for much of her life, imparting knowledge and wisdom to countless young minds as a teacher. Her roles at Cramerton Elementary and New Hope Elementary include teaching both 3rd and 5th grades, where she inspired students and fostered a love for learning. She served 5 elected terms , 10 years as Mayor of Lowell, as well as many different boards, Lowell Women's Club, Merchants Association was established during her time as Mayor. She also severed on the Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club board and the Lowell Fire Department board, all of which was very important to Judy.
Growing up in Madison County, NC Judy followed her mother to Western Carolina University, where she met the love of her life, Ted Horne. Judy was not only an exceptional educator but also a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. Her greatest pride came from her family, particularly her son, Zack and granddaughter, Avery, who was the apple of her eye; with whom she shared numerous joyous moments. Spending time with Avery and her family was a cherished aspect of Judy's life, and she leaves behind warm memories that will be fondly remembered by all who knew her.
Judy was a member of McAdenville Baptist Church, where she served in many different roles, she taught Sunday school, GA’s; and found a community that supported her values and beliefs. She fostered relationships with many wonderful dear friends throughout her life, each playing a significant role in her journey, many special and dear friends.
Judy is survived by her beloved son and daughter-in-law, Zack Konrad Horne and Angie Ottinger Horne, her precious granddaughter, Avery Horne, sister Molly L. Beinhorn and husband John, half sister, Cindy Leake Sprinkle, and numerous nieces and nephews and many friends. She was predeceased by her parents, Charles Oliver Leake and Edith Shelton Leake, and her beloved husband, Theodore "Ted" Horne, and their son that lived 3 months, Rocky Damon Horne, her brother Charles Ray Leake.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Judy's life and legacy at Withers & Whisenant Funeral Home, located at 2916 Union Road, Gastonia, NC 28054. Visitation will be held on Friday, January 9, 2026, from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at 12:00 PM, concluding with a time of remembrance that reflects the love and joy she brought into the lives of those around her. Burial will follow at Gaston Memorial Park, War Memorial II section beside her beloved husband, Ted.
Pallbearers will be Alan Brookshire, Mark Buchanan, Billy Stiles, Ken Ottinger, David McDaniel, Ben Pettit and Honorary, Jonathan McDaniel
Judy Horne's spirit will forever remain in the hearts of her family and friends, a testament to a life well-lived and a love well given.
