Lewis Calvin Hooper, a beloved figure in his community, passed away peacefully on March 7, 2026, at The Greens, surrounded by his family. Born on July 12, 1946, Calvin dedicated many years of his life to owning and operating Hooper Used Auto Parts, where he combined his passion for working on cars with a business that served the needs of countless individuals in his community. A true enthusiast of classic automobiles, Calvin had a particular fondness for Chevrolet's, often expressing his admiration for these timeless vehicles.
Calvin was not only a skilled businessman but also a personable and approachable individual. He had a vibrant personality that endeared him to many. Known to be fun-loving and caring, Calvin was someone who never met a stranger. His gregarious nature was complemented by his dedication to spending quality time with family and friends. He cherished creating memories, particularly those spent working on old cars, a hobby that brought him immense joy throughout his life.
Calvin's family was his proudest accomplishment. He is survived by his daughters, Shelley Hooper Burgess and Jennifer Hooper Bertorelli (Gino); his grandchildren, Darien Bess (Kylie), James Burgess, and Zana Huckabee (Austin); and his great-grandchildren, Lincoln Bess, Lucas Bess, and Baby Huckabee. He is also survived by his brother, Kenny Hooper (Marie), and his sisters, Carolyn Hamrick (Ray) and Sherry Carpenter (Johnny). Additionally, Calvin leaves behind several nieces, nephews, and many wonderful friends who will deeply miss his presence.
Calvin was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis and Myrtle Hooper; his beloved wife, Judy Kay Harbin Hooper, who passed away on April 21, 2024; and a brother, Tony Hooper. The legacy he leaves behind is one of love, laughter, and community spirit.
Family and friends are invited to gather for a visitation on Friday, March 13, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Withers & Whisenant Funeral Home and Cremation in Gastonia, NC. A funeral service will follow at 2:00 PM to at the same location. Calvin will then be laid to rest in a burial service starting at 3:00 PM at Gaston Memorial Park, located in Gastonia, NC with the releasing of the doves
In this time of sadness, we remember and celebrate the life of Lewis Calvin Hooper, a man who brought joy to those around him and was a steadfast rock for his family. His memory will forever remain a cherished part of their lives.
Pallbearers will Gino Bertorelli, James Burgess, Darien Bess, Jason Stamey, Mark Stamey and Austin Huckabee.
