Marlene Hovis Cloninger

Dallas – Marlene Hovis Cloninger, 90, passed away on April 21, 2023. She passed peacefully at her residence with her family by her side.

Marlene was born in Gaston County, on April 7, 1933 to the late Clyde T. and Alma Shipman Hovis. She was also preceded in death by her husband of over 40+ years, Robert Carroll “Bob” Cloninger and her second husband Lee White; brother, Tommy Hovis; and a sister, Thelda Alman.

She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Marlene was the owner of Marlene’s Beauty Shop. She enjoyed traveling, camping and playing cards, and mostly being with her friends. Marlene was a devoted mother and grandmother. She enjoyed spending time with her family.

She is survived by her sons, Richard Cloninger and wife (Loretta Peeler), Mark A Cloninger and wife (Lynn Hedgepeth); her wonderful grandchildren, Anna Slentz and husband Nathan, and Amy Cloninger; her great-grandchildren, Baylor Slentz, Ridley Slentz, and Bodhi Seagle; sisters, Ruth Henson and Rebecca Richards; as well as many dear nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

The family will receive friends, Saturday, May 13, from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church prior to the service at 12:00 p.m. with Reverend Dr. John H.  Spencer officiating.

Interment will be private at St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery at a later date

The family would like to express a heartfelt thank you to the staff at Gaston Hospice and the Visiting Angels.
