Belmont – Mavis Nell Smith Harris, 72, passed away on January 17, 2021 at the Robin Johnson House surrounded by her loving family. She was born on May 29, 1948 in Gaston County to the late Clyde Odell Smith, Sr and Emma Wooten Smith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Clyde Odell Smith, Jr., and sisters, Millie Grigg and Jewell Rhodes.

Mavis was a member of South Point Freewill Baptist Church. She and her husband Melvin owned & operated MaKel's Restaurant and Harris Pool Company for many years. She was a great southern cook and enjoyed cooking. She also was a jokester and loved telling stories, but most of all she and Melvin enjoyed traveling in their motor home all over the US. Mavis was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend who will be greatly missed!

Survivors include her loving husband of 55 years, Melvin Harris; son, Jody Harris (Tracy); daughter, Kelly Mitchell (Neal); grandchildren, Cameron Mitchell (Chelsey); Bryton Mitchell (Tillie); Colin Harris and Sarah Harris; great grandchildren, Annabelle and Aiden; her sister Marlene Mitchem; and her beloved fur baby Cosmo; numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation for family and friends will be 11:00 am – 12 Noon, Wednesday, January 20th Celebration of Life Service will follow at 12:00 Noon at South Point Freewill Baptist Church with Pastor Michael Byrd officiating. Interment will follow at Gaston Memorial Park with the releasing of the doves.
Pallbearers will be Cameron Mitchell, Bryton Mitchell, Colin Harris, Conner Harris, Robbie Smith and Shannon Palmer.

Memorials may be made to South Point Freewill Baptist Church, 297 Gaither Road, Belmont, NC 28012. Due to the Covid-19 outbreak, if you feel the need to stay home, a card or phone call to the family will be appreciated. Condolences may be made to Withers and Whisenant Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 2916 Union Road, Gastonia 704 864-5144 is serving the Family.
