Mildred Abbotine Sawyer

Mildred Abbotine Sawyer, a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on August 2, 2023, at her residence in Florence, South Carolina. Born on November 13, 1933, in Dallas, North Carolina, Mildred lived a life centered around serving her family and the Lord.

Mildred's love for her family and her unwavering faith were evident throughout her life. She was an active member of the First Free Will Baptist Church in Gastonia, North Carolina. Her involvement in the children's church showcased her deep connection with the younger generation as she shared her faith with them.

Cooking was not only a hobby but also a form of service for Mildred. She took immense joy in preparing delicious meals for her loved ones. Being a loving wife, mom, and grandmother brought Mildred immense fulfillment. Her proudest accomplishments revolved around taking care of her wonderful family and being the best wife, mom, and grandmother she could be.

Surrounded by her family during her final moments, Mildred transitioned from this world to the next with love and support all around her. Her spirit will forever be remembered as a source of strength and inspiration.

Mildred is survived by her devoted husband of almost 71 years, Billy E. Sawyer. Their anniversary would have been on September 5th—a testament to their enduring love and commitment. She leaves behind cherished memories in the hearts of those closest to her: Dr. Randall E Sawyer and his wife Teresa Cupp Sawyer; Susan S. Hiltibidal and her husband Michael; grandchildren Amanda Williams and her husband Rob, Brandon Hiltibidal and his wife Scarlett, Lauren Crittenden and her husband Brian, Jonathan Sawyer and his wife Kayla, Rebecca Lee and her husband Peter; great-grandchildren EverGrace Hiltibidal, Joy Sawyer Hiltibidal, Brooklan Hiltibidal, Avonlea Crittenden, Lincoln Crittenden, Lanie Williams, Riley Williams, Jameson Williams, Murphy Williams, and Arkynne Lee. Mildred's sister Faye Riddle also shares in the grief of losing such a beloved family member.

To honor Mildred's life and bid their final farewells in person, friends and family are invited to attend two memorial events.
This gathering will provide an opportunity to pay final respects to a woman who touched so many lives. Mrs. Sawyer will be lying in repose without the family being present from 10:00 until 12:00 Saturday, August 5th at Withers & Whisenant Funeral Home. A graveside service will take place at 2:00 p.m., Saturday in Gaston Memorial Park, Singing Tower 1 section in Gastonia with Dr. Randall E. Sawyer and Reverend Brandon Hiltibidal officiating. Family and friends can join together to find solace in celebrating Mildred's life while laying her to rest in a peaceful setting.
