Robert Eugene Saunders

Robert Eugene Saunders, 86, of Gastonia, passed away peacefully on March 24, 2024 at CaroMont Regional Medical Center.   

He was born in Gaston County on May 12, 1937 to the late John Carson Saunders and Florence Clemmer Saunders. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brothers, Fred Saunders, Truitt Saunders, and Joe Saunders; sisters, Ruby Saunders Nichols, Lucille Saunders Haas, Charlene Saunders Yerton, and Sarah Saunders; son, John Derick Saunders; and grandsons, Grayson Ward Sherrell and Carson Robert Sherrell.   

Robert proudly served in the US Air Force and after his service he worked for Southern Bell, AT&T, and Lucent Tech. He enjoyed watching Nascar and football. Robert was a problem solver and enjoyed solving crossword puzzles, sudoku, watching Jeopardy, and was a tinkerer that could fix anything. He was a go-to man that was always willing to help anyone in need. Robert was a common-sense man that could be relied on for help and advice. He leaves many happy memories to be cherished by all who knew and loved him. 

He is survived by his beloved wife 62 years, Betty McAllister Saunders; daughter, Donna Jean Sherrell (Roger); brother, Jim Saunders; grandchildren, Mahala Jean Sherrell and Piera Gray Sherrell; special niece Brandy Costner, and many more nieces and nephews. 

The family will receive friends on Monday April 1^st 2024 at 1:00 pm at Withers & Whisenant Funeral Home and a Memorial Service will follow at 2:00 pm in the chapel with Pastor Ronnie Dale officiating. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital and Cancer Services of Gaston County.
