Senator David William Hoyle, Sr.

 

DALLAS – Senator David William Hoyle, 84, of Dallas, died Wednesday, March 29, 2023 at home.

 

David was a native of Gaston County, son of the late William Atkin and Ethel Brown Hoyle.  David was a graduate of Dallas High School, attended the Citadel, graduate and recipient of an Honorary Doctorate Degree from Lenoir-Rhyne University. He was active in his church having served as Chairman of Church Council and Sunday School Teacher in addition to other positions.  He received numerous awards and recognitions for his dedicated leadership and service to his community, Gaston County and the state of North Carolina.

 

Career: David was a Real Estate Developer/Investor at Outer Banks-NC, Hilton Head-SC, Myrtle Beach-SC, Austin-TX; Founder and President of Summey Building Systems, Inc.- Dallas; Owner - DWH Investments, Gastonia; Chairman of the Board of Citizens South Bank-Gastonia; Chairman of the Board of Lenoir Rhyne University; Chairman of the Board of Gaston Memorial Hospital; Member of the Board of Ticaro; Lead Director and Member of Board of Directors of The Shaw Group-LA.

 

David was the youngest mayor of the Town of Dallas 1967 - 1971; he was appointed to the Department of Transportation by Governor Jim Hunt 1977-1984 and was directly responsible for the completion of Highway 321 (from Gaston County to Catawba County of which that segment was appropriately named The Senator David W. Hoyle Highway); elected to the North Carolina Legislature as a Senator for nine terms (1992-2010) with a distinguished record and consistently recognized for his exceptional leadership with high rankings from by-partisan organizations and peers. He was appointed as Secretary of Revenue in October 2010 by Governor Beverly Perdue and served with distinction.

 

Preceded in Death by: His parents, William Atkin and Ethel Brown Hoyle; brother, Blair Craig Hoyle; father and mother-in-law, Lonnie and Queen Summey; sister-in-law, Shirley Summey Setzer.

 

Survivors: His wife, Linda Summey Hoyle; daughter and son-in-law, Lonnia and Todd Beam of Cherryville; son and daughter-in-law, David “Dave” W. and Resa D. Hoyle, Jr of Dallas; grandsons, Matthew Hoyle Beam (Kathryn) of Greensboro; David William “Will” Hoyle, III (Erica) of Dallas; and Michael Blair Hoyle of Dallas; Great-Granddaughter, Clara Elisabeth Beam and Great-Grandsons, Samuel Ryan Beam and Henry William Beam of Greensboro; Great-Granddaughter, Adalynn Rose Hoyle of Dallas;  sisters-in-law, Frances Goins and husband Rev. Ted W. Goins of Salisbury, and Pat Sellers of Dallas;  ten very special nephews and nieces

Celebration of Life Service:  Monday, April 3, 2023 at 2 PM, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 531 Hardin Rd., Dallas, NC.

 

Senator Hoyle will lie in state from 11:00 until 2:00 p.m., Saturday, April 1, 2023 and also on Sunday, from 2:00 until 5:00 p.m., at Withers & Whisenant Funeral Home. The family will not be present.

 

Burial: St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Cemetery – followed by visitation and sharing remembrances with his family at the grave site.
