William "Bill' Samuel Newell

William "Bill" Samuel Newell, 69, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 17, 2021, at CaroMont Regional Medical Center. He was born on June 6, 1952 in Marion, Indiana, and is the son of the late Acel and Rebecca Brackett Newell.
Bill was a graduate of North Gaston High School, retired from the City of Gastonia, a member of Temple Baptist Church, a member of Gastonia Lodge #369 AF&AM, member of the Oasis Temple Shrine in Charlotte, where he was a member of the "Wagoneer's". Bill was a former member of the Gastonia Life Saving Crew for over 30 years.
Bill is survived by three sisters, Mary Smith and husband Marvin, Carolyn Randolph, Roberta Burkett, and husband Dale; one niece, Risha Milner; two nephews, Jeff Loflin, Mark Loflin; two great-nephews, Damien Loflin, Brayden Milner; and special friends the Sowells.
Bill will lie in state at Withers and Whisenant Funeral Home from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday, December 20, 2021, for friends to pay their respects. The family will not be present.
A Celebration of Life Graveside Service will be 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 21, 2021, in the New Masonic I Section of Gaston Memorial Park with Rev. Scott Whitener officiating. Masonic Rites will be performed at the Graveside Service. The family will speak to family and friends following the graveside service.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents and his brother-in-law, Jerry Randolph.
